JOHNSON, CHARLES TRIM, was born at Westergate, Sussex, on 4th
February, 1845. His parents were menbers of the Church of England and
the home influence was definitely evanglical. He was apprenticed to a ship-
building at Emsworth, Hants. He attended a Bible class at the rectory ad
the recto, recognising his abilities , offered at his own expense, to send him to
a theological training college with a view to his entering the Church, but as
he had already been convinced of the scriptural truth of Believers' Baptism
he declined the generous offer, and was baptizes by the Rev. E. G. Gange, at
Lake Road Church, Portsmouth. He entered upon Christian work as a lay
evangelist at Littlehampton, Sussex, in 1864, and in the following year was
received into Spurgeon's College. His first settlement was was at Alford, Lincs.,
where the Church was revived and good work done. Then followed a short
pastorate at Westgate, Peterborough. In 1872 Mr. Johnson removed to Coal-
ville, Leicestershire, where his ministry was memorable and successful. He
gave his energies and enthusiasm with unstinted devotion, and there was an
unceasing revival. Convesions and baptisms were reported every month. He
gathered around him a band of men and women of kindred spirit who loyally
served him. In 1877 he removed to Long Eaton and, in 1879 to Longton,
Staffs., where he remained for eight years, which proved to be amoung the most
fruitful in the Church's history. He accepted a call to Falmouth in 1888,
where his ministry was equally successful, many being added to the Church.
Mr. Johnson removed to Romsey in 1896 and to Dartford in 1898, where he
spent five happy years and again established a reputation as a faithful
preacher and soul winner. His last charge was at Shepshed. His health was
now failing; he had frequent attacks of Angina Pectoris and was compelled
to retire finally in 1904. His character was of sterling quality; he had great
influence with youg people and was the friend and champion of the poor, a
keen Temprance advocate and resolute in the advocacy of the central
doctrines of the Baptist faith. He passed to a Higher Service on 16th
March, 1930. W. B. | Johnson, Charles Trim (I508)
